Board Responds To My Report

I got an email from a disturbed Board Member who stated that "we do everything humanly possible to keep the procedure accurate and correct". The email went on to say:

So can you please out of curiosity let me know what it is you want us to do with the garage list so that we can move on. I strongly feel we are doing 100% to be responsible to all shareholders and make sure that everyone that is supposed to be on the list is there. Keep in mind that we are human and an error can be made by missing a name but when we realize it we correct our errors.

I responded with the following.

Dear [Name Removed]:

You say you are doing everything humanly possible, and maybe you are right. This is a job for a database, it is not a job for a human.

I don't care who manages the garage and waiting list, but I do care that it is managed with an appropriate process and that there are safeguards against errors both accidental and intentional.

Forget for a second that you are doing everything humanly possible and look at the the fact that you don't know how many spots you allocated between May and August. Look at the fact that you can't account for four spots during that period. Look at the fact that there are 23 skipped numbers on the new list and that errors on the prior list were not corrected. Do you feel satisfied with the quality of this list? Your sincerest efforts simply don't compensate for the lack of a formal process.

Several Board Members have taken my investigation as personal assaults against their integrity, but I have never suggested wrongdoing. I do, however assert that your lack of "process" provides no safeguards, and is therefore critically flawed.

You asked about my goals. With respect to the Waiting Lists, my goal is to know that we have a reliable, fair, robust process in place to allocate Garage Spots. With regard to Seward Park Housing Corporation at-large, my goal is to foster a culture of communication and transparency.

It is evident that you feel antagonized, and for that I am sorry. I am attacking the lack of process, and am not attacking the people involved. For what it is worth, if you had produced a November 2005 waiting list that wasn't severely flawed, the Garage Committee would at this time be receiving my commendations.

Sincerely,

Dan Strum
