Entry 4 "The Hester Street People's Sculpture Park"
I believe the Hester Street Property should become "The Hester Street
People's Sculpture Park." I think it could be entrusted by a neighborhood
artist's collective (such as mine) and/or in conjunction with The
Educational Alliance Art School near by where the character of the
current neighborhood is highly valued. A commitment to diversity and
the feel of pre-overdeveloped new York would be maintained there,
as well as a commitment to represent more unknown artists in a time
when the New York Art world and its spaces are becoming ever more
impenetrable and subject to this same overdevelopment and obsession
with the bottom line. The place would have some of the funky quality,
accessibility and personality of Downtown New York art culture of
the past.
The collective and the Alliance could jointly seek grants (that is
my background) to sustain the park and the exhibiting artists could
also be asked to absorb some of the costs of installation, etc. themselves
-- as many would be enthralled at the opportunity to exhibit their
work in such a special space. My two photos show you an example of
my own work mocked up in a rudimentary fashion, but in reality, I
would envision a diverse array or works and accompanying public programs
for seniors and the rest of the public where the artists talk about
their work. I teach Public Art classes at SUNY Harry Van Arsdale School
for Labor Studies and would love to be involved in creating a truly
public forum around the work. It could be installed short or long
term, along with other details that could be worked out if the idea
is to be voted on favorably. It would be wonderful to bring the arts
and the neighborhood together in this very public way. I have enclosed
my resume as well so you can see that I have the background and determination
to help see something like this through. I look forward to elaborating
on this proposal further. |
